About Small Ripples Theatre

Small Ripples Theatre was formed in 2023 by three Asian artists (and friends) of diverse artistic backgrounds.

Small Ripples aims to:

  1. Create original musicals centring on Asian culture and stories

  2. Provide opportunities for Asian artists and creatives, on-stage and off, to develop and showcase their talent

  3. Tell meaningful stories about the human experience that encourage a more empathetic and inclusive society

Small Ripples got its name from the saying, “Small ripples create big waves” - 小涟漪掀起大风浪.

We hope to use musicals as an art form to start conversations and to explore social issues that are often 'hidden away' or deeply impacting our community.

Our first musical is 'Best Cabinet Maker the musical 唐人木匠音樂劇'. It is inspired by the Chinese furniture makers back in 1900s Melbourne. It follows the journey of Ah Chan and his wife Ah Moi, who work to make a home in Australia while facing discrimination in a system built against them. The musical references real events including the 1903 Chinese Cabinet Makers' Strike and the White Australia Policy. It aims to question 'how far have we progressed as a multicultural society' since the 1900s.

Our second musical is 'Hidden Tunes 弦外之影', The musical places a spotlight on a student's sexual harassment case, perpetrated by a prestigious professor at a traditional Chinese music academy. It aims to explore the perspective and the role of bystanders, as well as the importance of forming allyship with victim survivors.
